The northwestern side of Cambodia is home to the city of Siem Reap. A place where the ruins of the ancient Khmer Kingdom come together with the bright lights of modern Cambodian life.

Once you’re here, there’s the ever-present danger of getting overwhelmed with things to do in Siem Reap and places to see. However, worry not: this article is your response to your What to do in Siem Reap question.

Discover the most unique things you can do during your time in Siem Reap, together with some off-the-beaten paths attractions and unique Cambodian experiences.

I first visited Siem Reap taking a bus from Bangkok, Thailand, and spent 4 days here! I’m not gonna lie, I absolutely loved Cambodia, the people, the food, and the chaotic but nice-to-experience vibe in town.

Things to Do in Siem Reap – Overview

Before going through the best activities in town, let’s discuss about Siem Reap as a city, its location, getting there, and more information you may need as a first-timer.

Where is Siem Reap?

Siem Reap is a little gem tucked away in Northwestern Cambodia. It’s famous for being home to Angkor Wat, one of the biggest religious sites in the world, but there’s so much more to it.

Picture a vibrant town filled with markets, street food, and a mix of traditional and modern culture. It’s a place where history and the present meet. Surrounded by rice paddies and close to the Tonle Sap Lake, Siem Reap is not just a stopover; it’s a destination in itself!

How to Get to Siem Reap?

Getting to Siem Reap is easier than you might think. If you’re flying, you can get to Siem Reap International Airport from different airports around Asia.

If you’re already exploring Cambodia, buses and taxis from Phnom Penh or other cities are a good bet. They’re affordable and offer a real taste of the journey through Cambodia’s countryside.

Alternatively, if you’re in Thailand, you can get a bus from Bangkok, which is what I did and it was nice seeing the countryside of both countries in one day.

Is Siem Reap Worth Visiting?

Siem Reap is definitely worth visiting for a variety of reasons. Beyond the gateway to the Angkor temples, the city itself has many things to offer, from its bustling night markets to Pub Street to traditional Apsara dance performances and more.

Plus, Siem Reap serves as a base for exploring nearby attractions such as the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake and the Cambodian Cultural Village, making it a diverse travel destination.

Lastly, it’s one of the cheapest places in Southeast Asia, and that is always a bonus.

15 Best Things to Do in Siem Reap

Now that you have more context and information about the city, let’s go through the main Siem Reap activities, and I know what you’re thinking. – Angkor Wat is indeed part of this list.

And the reason is, it’s one of the best, most unique places in Southeast Asia, and I recommend you don’t skip it.

This said, I will go through the best things to do in siem reap besides temples too, so that you have more choice when coming into town.

Discover the Temples of Angkor Wat

If you looked up the Cambodian flag before your trip, you’ve already seen Angkor Wat. A grand temple complex right next to the city of Siem Reap, one of the best things to do in Cambodia.

Also called the Angkor Archaeological Park, this is the largest religious monument in the world, created as a spiritual home for the god Vishnu, intricately constructed in a prime example of ancient architecture.

Visiting Angkor Wat should be on top of your list of things to do in Siem Reap. Seeing the temples, especially Angkor Thom, go around with your tuk tuk, and see the monks praying and chanting.

You’re free to wander through the temples of the ancient Khmer Empire, taking in the wall galleries telling of Cambodian myths and legends. Don’t miss the magical sunrise and the sunset as it will be one of the most unique things to do in Cambodia and is certainly a great experience in Southeast Asia.

It’s worth noting that you need a taxi to visit Angkor Wat, as the site is massive, and you have different tours you can join to get around – 1-day Angkor Wat tours, 2-day tours, and 3-day tours.

The entrance fee for each package varies, of course, from US$37 for a day pass to US$62 for a 2-day pass and US$72 for 3 days.

I personally got the 3-day tour and it was just enough to see the major temples and some smaller ones, so if you have enough time, I recommend buying this one.
