This is the Best Time to Visit Chiang Mai in 2024

Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s most attractive and visited tourist destinations, offering visitors tons of fun and exciting things to do. But if you don’t know the best time to visit Chiang Mai, you might just end up here in the wrong season – heavy rain, smoke, etc.

It is the biggest city in Northern Thailand and significantly different from other parts of the country like Bangkok, from weather and landscape to food and culture.

With its stunning temples, vibrant night markets, and lush greenery, it’s no wonder that Chiang Mai draws visitors year-round. Plus, it’s one amazing destination to include in your Thailand honeymoon itinerary!

However, I’ve lived in Chiang Mai for 3 years, and the rainy season and the smoke period weren’t always fun. That’s why I’m here to tell you the right time to visit Chiang Mai.

Let’s get started.

Best Time to Visit Chiang Mai

The best time for visiting Chiang Mai is between November and February. These months offer pleasant temperatures with little rain.

This season is when many festivals and activities happen in the city, including Chiang Mai Flower Festival in early February.

Chiang Mai offers excellent vacating weather during these months, with an average of 27°C (80°F) with very little humidity and clear sunny skies.

Worst Time to Visit Chiang Mai

The worst times to visit Chiang Mai are between May and September, during the rainy season, and between February and April, during the smokey period.

If you haven’t heard of the smokey period before, the farmers in the mountains burn their crops and, therefore, Chiang Mai becomes the most polluted place in the world until around mid-April.

Climate in Chiang Mai, Thailand

You can expect 3 seasons in Chiang Mai – hot, rainy, and winter (also called the cool season).

Summer in Chiang Mai – March to May

The hot season starts towards the end of February. From March to May, the midday temperatures usually get beyond 32°C (89°F).

April is the hottest month, with up to 40°C daytime temperature. But visiting the city in April is still fun despite the hot weather because of Songkran Festival, the Thai new year.

Rainy Season in Chiang Mai – June to October

Typically, the rainy season runs from June to October. Temperatures during this season cool down, but the air humidity is still high. The wet weather is due to the monsoon in late May.

The rainfall usually comes as quick, short tropical downpour blasts, mainly in the afternoon or at night.

While there are plenty of things to do in Chiang Mai, it’s surely not the best moment to visit.

When monsoons reach their peak in August and September, it rains heavier and more constantly. However, Chiang Mai experiences several sunny days with no rain this season.

Winter in Chiang Mai – November to February

The winter season in Chiang Mai runs from November to mid-February. This season is the best time to visit Chang Mai.

It offers the year’s most relaxing time with around 28°C (82°F) daytime temperature and 10°C (50°F) night time temperature. These months have the lowest rainfall.

On average, January offers the coolest temperatures. The weather between December and January is excellent.

January Weather in Chiang Mai

January offers the year’s best weather with an average 29°C (84°F). The sky is clear and sunny during the day, while the nighttime offers sweater weather.

Since this month is part of the peak season, the city is crowded with tourists, so I recommend booking your day trips from Chiang Mai and hotels ahead of time. During this month, Chinese New Year and other festivals are a must-see.
